Historical facts about ISU-152

The ISU-152 (Object 241) was a Soviet heavy self-propelled artillery unit (SAU) of the Great Patriotic War period. The letter "I" in the machine's name, in addition to the standard Soviet designation "SU" - self-propelled machine gun, means "based on the IS tank". SAU of the same caliber under the name SU-152 was produced on another tank base. The index 152 stood for the calibre of the main armament of the vehicle.

It was developed by the design bureau of the pilot plant ¹100 in June - October 1943 and adopted to the armament of Workers and Peasants Red Army (RKKA) on November 6 of the same year. At the same time it began serial production at the Chelyabinsk Kirov Plant (ChKZ), which continued until 1946.

Beginning in the mid-1970s, the IMS-152 was removed from the Soviet Army and replaced by more modern SAU; a number of survivors from being cut to metal now serve as monuments and exhibits in museums around the world.

The jargon name of the ISU-152 was "Beast Boy". In Wehrmacht it was called "Dosenöffner" (from German "tin opener").
